The Global Positioning System (GPS), as a worldwide radio-based navigation system, has a total of 24 satellites with their corresponding ground stations. These satellites, or “man-made stars” as they are popularly called, act as reference points to calculate positions of various objects.

Accuracy can be ascertained in a matter of meters. In advanced forms of GPS, the measurements are even more accurate to as close as centimeters.

These days, the technology to make these satellites have been that sophisticated to make them rather small with only a few necessary integrated circuits. That is why it is so economical to build one of these.
