Auto/handheld combination
Is there GPS unit available which is auto/handled? I would like to purchase GPS for my sister who will be a college gradute this year. She would like to move to NYC after graduation. Is there a unit that she can use as handheld gadget for her to get familiar with routes? What will be the best unit for a first time users?

Re: Auto/handheld combination
Garmin Nuvi is very good for first time users. They are battery operated and can be used in "pedestrian modes." It is also useful if she would do a lot of walking. I recommend her a non-wide screen model as they can be easier to carry for pockets. Although, GPS units are somewhat cumbersome to pockets or wallets.

Re: Auto/handheld combination
The other good thing about Nuvi models are those in 200 series because they 'hold' switches so that if you are walking around the city, it will ignore accidental touch screen input especially if you put inside your purse or pocket.
